The first time I heard Debut and saw Björk playing live on television, I was stunned. The freshness, originality and beauty of the music still shines through nearly 10 years later.
And she's hardly put a foot wrong since. A series of great albums, sensational performances on Later with Jules Holland, a hilarious duet with Tony Ferrino (Steve Coogan) for Comic Relief in 1997, the moving Dancer in the Dark, and her recent appearances with orchestra and choir.
I nearly changed my mind about putting Björk on my favourites list. My other all-time greats were making music in my teens - Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Paul Weller, Echo and The Bunnymen, David Bowie. But to grab me so strongly in 1993 when my musical predjudices were fully formed just gives her the edge.
Her music is too hard for me to arrange and play on my own ... but maybe after lots more practice I'll get there.
